Thanatology: An Acrostic Poem by Ken Breniman

Thanatology

than·a·tol·o·gy | \ ˌtha-nə-ˈtä-lə-jē \:  noun.   the description or study of the phenomena of death and of psychological mechanisms for coping with them

Though so few know this word, all know it’s powerful pertinence in every breath

How dare we take for granted, even the next breath which is not guaranteed

Acquired taste, bittersweet it may be, a rich necessity to whet the tongue as one speaks of it

Neither avoidance nor acceptance will fully prepare the psyche as every a-ha is coupled with a huh?!

Approach this study with open-hearted reluctance and sit with the discomfort as a welcoming ritual

Topics to explore are everywhere, in the trees, in the mirror, from the past and into the future

Opting out is not an option, and the discomfort invites in some ease or dare we say Grace

Logotherapy can be self-induced, if you know what I mean

Omnipresent does not equate to ominous, a more optimistic tutee might proport

Gazing into the abyss, there awaits not the answer but another quest(ion)

Yippee, yikes or ylem allow each of us to graduate with honor and possibly start again
